The 9 ridges that surround the design represent the 9 exposed rock layer formations present in the park: Dakota Formation, Carmel Formation, Temple Cap Formation, Navajo Sandstone, Kayenta Formation, Moenave Formation, Chinle Formation, Moenkopi Formation, and Kaibab Limestone. These geological layers tell the story of millions of years of Earth's history.
The scene depicted here combines elements of the views of Zion Canyon from Angels Landing and the canyon perspective one receives while exploring the Narrows; you can almost feel the towering canyon walls' presence surrounding you as you view the scene.
The chains here honor the chain cables found on sections of the Angels Landing Trail as hikers near the summit, helping visitors navigate the narrow ridge with steep drop-offs on both sides as they ascend to one of Zion's most iconic viewpoints.
The two primary canyons making up the park are Zion and Kolob canyons; Mukuntuweap is the original name given by American settlers to Zion and is believed to come from the language of the Paiute people who have lived in the region for centuries. Zion was originally established as a national monument under this name and is included here in recognition of the park's connection to Indigenous cultures.
The park was established as a national park on November 19, 1919. Originally designated as Mukuntuweap National Monument in 1909, it was later renamed and redesignated to preserve its spectacular canyons, unique rock formations, and diverse ecosystems for future generations.
