General Sherman's status as the world's largest tree by volume is honored by the blue star. Overall, five of the world's ten largest trees are located within the park, reflected by the presence of five stars above the sequoia tree.
The giant sequoia tree (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is the park's namesake and defining feature. These trees grow almost exclusively on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, at elevations ranging from about 4,000 to 7,000 feet, and are among the most massive living organisms on Earth.
The eastern portion of the park is defined by Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States and southern terminus of the John Muir Trail. This dramatic mountain range showcases the park's diverse alpine ecosystems and challenging high-altitude terrain.
The blue star above Mt. Whitney symbolizes its status as the highest peak in the lower 48 states, rising to 14,505 feet (4,421 m) above sea level. This iconic summit attracts mountaineers and hikers from around the world seeking to conquer California's roof.
Sequoia National Park was established on September 25, 1890, and is the nation's second oldest national park. This historic designation helped preserve these ancient forest giants and their pristine mountain wilderness for future generations.
