The border with 14 ridges honors Longs Peak, the park's iconic fourteener and its tallest peak which sits at 14,249 ft; the interior of the design is divided into four sections, each representing a distinct ecosystem that exists within this ecologically varied park.
The montane valleys support the park's most celebrated resident - the elk, whose bugle calls echo through these protected lands during the fall rut.
The riparian section celebrates the park's role as a vital watershed, where the headwaters of the Colorado River begin their epic journey through the American West, nourishing ecosystems and communities far beyond the park's boundaries.
The subalpine zone is marked by hardy evergreens that have adapted to survive harsh winters and short growing seasons, creating the classic Rocky Mountain forests that blanket the park's middle elevations.
The alpine ecosystem captures a realm above the tree line where rugged peaks pierce the sky and resilient wildflowers paint brief splashes of color in an environment defined by fierce winds, intense sun, and a growing season measured in weeks.
Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park preserves a dramatic slice of Colorado's Front Range and is America's ninth oldest national park.
