The snow-capped peaks represent the Olympic Mountains, whose glacially-carved summits rise dramatically from near sea level to almost 8,000 feet; these mountains create their own weather patterns and shelter unique species found nowhere else on Earth.
The towering evergreens showcase Olympic's temperate rainforest, where some of Earth's largest conifers thrive in one of the wettest ecosystems in the continental United States; these ancient forests receive up to 14 feet of rain annually, creating an emerald realm of moss-draped giants.
Elk antlers frame the design as a tribute to the Roosevelt elk, named for President Theodore Roosevelt, that roam the park's rainforests and meadows; these elk were instrumental in the park's creation, as protecting their dwindling population was one of the primary motivations when President Theodore Roosevelt designated it a national monument.
Olympic's 73-mile coastline - the longest stretch of wilderness coast in the lower 48 states - is filled with dramatic sea stacks rising from the Pacific waters; these iconic rock formations were carved by millennia of waves and stand as sentinels of the park's rugged Pacific shore.
Elevated to National Park status in 1938, Olympic protects nearly one million acres of Washington's Olympic Peninsula and some of the Pacific Northwest's most diverse ecosystems, preserving this unique wilderness for future generations to explore and cherish.
The shield's design provides a glimpse into each of Olympic's three distinct ecosystems - alpine wilderness, temperate rainforest, and wild coastline; the monochromatic palette of greens pays homage to Olympic's verdant character, from the emerald canopy of thousand-year-old trees to the dense carpets of moss that blanket the forest floor.
