The multiple depictions of the sun in the design honors Haleakalā's name, which means "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian; this iconic summit is renowned for its spectacular sunrises, where visitors gather before dawn to witness the first light breaking over the crater's otherworldly landscape.
The silversword plant ('āhinahina) is Haleakalā's most distinctive botanical treasure and grows nowhere else on Earth; it may live for decades before producing a spectacular flowering stalk up to 6 feet tall, the final stage of its lifecycle.
The Pools of 'Ohe'o (also known as Seven Sacred Pools) showcases the park's diverse ecosystems; these cascading freshwater pools in the Kīpahulu area represent the journey from mountain to sea, as the park spans from sea level to an elevation of more than 10,000 feet.
A depiction of the nēnē, Hawaiʻi's state bird, represents the park's critical role as a sanctuary for endangered Hawaiian species; as one of many threatened endemic creatures protected within Haleakalā's boundaries, the nēnē symbolizes both the fragility of Hawaiʻi's unique wildlife and the ongoing conservation efforts that have helped these rare island species survive against mounting environmental challenges.
Established in 1961, Haleakalā National Park was separated from what was then Hawaiʻi National Park to become its own protected area, preserving both the volcanic summit and the lush Kīpahulu coastal region for future generations to explore and cherish.
The inner shield design reflects Haleakalā's geological formation as a shield volcano, whose gradual lava flows created the massive mountain that comprises 75% of Maui; this dormant volcano last erupted over 400 years ago, creating the dramatic crater landscape visitors see today.
