Designated in 1934, the Great Smoky Mountains have long been revered as one of America's most treasured natural wonders. The park was established to preserve this remarkable ecosystem for future generations.
The black bear is the park's most iconic resident and a symbol of its abundant wildlife. These magnificent creatures roam the densely forested valleys, serving as ambassadors for the incredible biodiversity that thrives within this park.
The Great Smoky Mountains are the backbone of this park; the soft haze that envelops them and inspired their name is a product of the unique convergence of elevation, moisture, and microclimates found in this remarkable subrange of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
There are sixteen leaves to represent the number of Southern Sixers, the group of mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina that reach elevations higher than 6,000 feet, that call this park home.
The laurel wreath represents the park's status as topping the National Park System in two separate categories: 1) being the most biodiverse with over 19,000 documented species and estimates of up to 100,000 species total; and 2) consistently being the most visited U.S. national park annually.
Within the laurel wreath are a butterfly, wildflower, salamander, and lilac, all representing the park's astounding biodiversity. The salamander holds particular significance as five of the world's nine families of salamanders are found in the park.
